I and A are each the shortest actual English words. Both ‘i’ and ‘I’ are the narrowest words while ‘a’ is the shortest. For other short words check the list of 2 letter words or 3 letter words.

A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y
Vowels are know for the sound produced with the free passage of air from the mouth to the larynx. True for vowels sounds only at no time does any part of the mouth, tongue, larynx, or lips touch. Q Without U
